Beginning with the family, we promote focused projects of self help that have a multiplying effect in the community.

Fondo de Ahorro para Vivienda (FAV)
The program consists of:

  • Organizing families into a community organization who have the need and drive to obtain a dignified home.
  • Integrating families in a weekly savings system.
  • Instructing the families in manufacturing construction materials.
  • Assisting in the system of self help construction.
  • Providing the necessary equipment and tools.
  • Helping maintain a system of loan repayment, which stays in the community as a revolving fund for future homes.

Volunteer Groups
Volunteer groups have an important role in the support of these community programs. Years of work by FEM have established a relationship with many organized groups, mainly from the United States, who enthusiastically work with the poorest neighborhoods of Tijuana.

These volunteer groups help capitalization of the community funds by paying fees with the service they provide. The group also experience teamwork, leadership skills, a different culture and the reality surrounding the most traveled border in the world.

Environmental
We believe that the families and the individuals with whom we work, have the ability to do many things as a community. While our main focus is on the formation of true community, home construction and inclusion of volunteers, we also support a variety of other programs.

In our region, water is scarce, and rapid urban growth is deteriorating our environment, In addition, the establishment of proper utilities and services is slow and difficult in recent residential developments.

We have begun, in collaboration with a variety of organizations, training community teachers to promote the conservation and hygienic use of water. They are trained with simple education modules that address issues of both conservation and the proper use of water in order to avoid common illnesses.

These promotoras, once trained, go out and teach families within their communities.
The program also provides training for recycling garbage. Families use items such as potato chips bags and tire inner tubes to create traditionally styled arts. Not only does this reduce the communities waste and litter, but it also creates a new source of income for the participating families selling their recycled craft.

There have been workshops on the correct handling of household toxins to avoid accidental injury or poisoning from everyday chemicals. We have also offered workshops on household composting.
Esperanza has joined with "Granito de Arena...Little Grain of Sand" working to clean up the beaches of Rosarito.

Environmental projects are a developing area of work for FEM.
